Apply for Aid

The first step in applying for financial aid is to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This application is used to determine your eligibility for all types of federal student aid (grants and loans).

The application will be available after October 1, and will cover periods of enrollment for Fall and Spring semesters. To complete the FAFSA you will need:

  • Your social security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Use the IRS data retrieval option when completing the FAFSA to import your tax information from the IRS or, have a copy of your prior-prior year Federal Income Tax Return– 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. You will also need a record of any untaxed income (such as child support received).

If you are a dependent (single, under 24 years old, and do not have children, you will also need the above information for your parents.

The Federal School Code for Geneva General Hospital’s Schools of Nursing (Marion S. Whelan & the Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing & Health Sciences) is:

The Federal Processor will forward the application to the school within 7 days.

If your file is selected for verification, you will be asked to submit a copy of your  IRS tax transcript and/or income information to the school for review. If there are errors on your application, the Financial Aid Office will make the appropriate corrections to your FAFSA.

Once you have completed your FAFSA, you will need to apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The easiest way to apply for TAP is through the FAFSA. You will find a link to the HESC website on the submission confirmation page of the FAFSA.

The TAP Code is:

New York State (NYS) residents attending NYS schools can link directly to the TAP application from the FAFSA submission confirmation page. If you exited the FAFSA before completing the TAP application, HESC will automatically receive your information in about 3 days. HESC will then send you an email or postcard with directions to complete the TAP application online.

How Financial Aid is Awarded:

Financial aid is designed to help individuals meet their educational expenses when their own resources are not enough. Typically, Federal and State financial aid is based on income and is available to families who demonstrate financial need. In order to meet, as closely as possible, your financial need, the financial aid office first awards any federal and state grants and scholarships for which you are eligible (e.g., Pell Grants, SEOG Grants,  NYS TAP). If needed, Federal Direct Loans are then added to your aid package to help cover tuition, fees and eligible educational expenses. Your total financial aid package, including grants, scholarships, tuition reimbursements, and loans may not exceed your total cost of attendance. Once all paperwork is complete, you will be notified via email of your eligibility and provided with an Award Letter in the Empower system.

The cost of attendance is the estimated cost of attending the program for a full academic year, including estimated amounts for tuition and fees, books and supplies, housing, transportation, plus a modest allowance for personal/miscellaneous expenses. The following are the estimated expenses you might incur while enrolled at FLHCON or MSW.
